Roblox has unveiled a groundbreaking licensing platform designed to make intellectual property usage seamless for both IP holders and platform creators.
The initiative introduces two core components: the License Manager and the Licenses Catalog, built to unlock licensed experiences at scale.
Roblox is targeting the ambitious goal of routing 10% of global gaming content revenue through its ecosystem, including creators and rights holders alike. To achieve this, they are enabling easy access to recognizable franchises and IPs, while fostering a thriving, creator-led economy.
This self-serve tool empowers IP holders to:
Register and configure licensing terms (e.g., user maturity, content guidelines, revenue share)
Scan the platform for existing IP use
Offer licenses to creators, quickly approving requests in days or even hours instead of months
A marketplace where verified creators can browse available IP, submit usage requests, and gain approval. All in a compliant and streamlined workflow.
Roblox debuted the platform with four major IP holders, offering seven initial titles, with more arriving soon:
Netflix: Stranger Things, Squid Game
Lionsgate: Twilight, Saw, Divergent, Now You See Me
Sega: Like a Dragon (Yakuza)
Kodansha (upcoming): Blue Lock and That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime
Licensing terms vary: Netflix offers a ~15% Robux revenue share, while The Twilight Saga via Lionsgate comes with a ~25% share. Minimum traffic or content alignment requirements may apply depending on the IP.
Scale brand presence through millions of daily active users
Monitor, manage, and monetize IP usage via an intuitive dashboard
Gain legal, official access to premier content—no more daunting copyright questions
Unlock revenue opportunities with branded experiences that attract new players
Dive into richer, authentic games based on popular media
Experience fan-made content under official license and quality guidance
Roblox plans to onboard more IP holders across film, TV, anime, gaming, opening License Manager access to all eligible entities in the coming months.
Additional license types—beyond full-experience adaptations—are under exploration, offering even more creative flexibility.
This complements other creator-focused initiatives like commerce APIs, merchandising support, and new creator reward programs.
Roblox is transforming the IP licensing landscape. Democratizing access, accelerating approval, and enabling creators to legally build experiences with globally recognized brands. For IP holders, it opens a new frontier to monetize fandom through immersive experiences. And together, this model strengthens Roblox’s creator economy and cements its role as a leader in metaverse-driven entertainment.
